The
Tourbillon
The Tourbillon (pronounced TOUR-BEE-OHN)
was patented by Breguet in 1801. It is a type of watch
mechanism that turns the escapement on its own axis at a fixed rate,
compensating for the positional errors caused by gravity and making it the
most accurate of all mechanical watch movements. This constant rotation is
how the Tourbillon got its name - the word is French for "whirlwind". The
Tourbillon is generally considered to be the greatest test of a watchmaker's
skill and has traditionally been available only in watches costing tens of
thousands of dollars or more. Modern technology has been applied
to the problem, and while they remain among the most desirable and
prestigious of timepieces, owning a Tourbillon has recently become much more
affordable.
